Was it really that long ago? Time flies, eh? Anyway.... They could have added it to the Mini back then quietly and without redesigning the whole case, similar to the way that the 5th USB port was added, if it was to satisfy photographers.

And they didn't need to immediately go to the top end SDXC.... most consumer cameras aren't using those cards yet. Once the low or middle speed SD card reader was added, it would have been easy to upgrade it to the top end SD card reader in a few years when those cards were more widely used. This would have been more in line of Apple's philosophy of increasing specs and features and keeping prices down. i.e. Today's new Mini has plain SD card reader, and in a year they "add" the faster reader to make a "new" new Mini.

I think there is something more to this... we'll just have to stay tuned, eh?

My EOS 400D works fine (in tethered mode as well as just transfering from the memory card)?

    Lucky you.

The interface is slick, but it is slow as a tortise. Maybe they are still bringing additional servers online, but I hope the speed improves...

[EDIT] Just tried it using Firefox 2.0, and the speed is MUCH faster than on Safari. Interesting...

Hmm, so if I choose a OS that is more intuitive to use, more easier to use, I am not tech savvy anymore?

No, you made his point because you went all defensive and fearful over Android.

It's not any "harder" to use or figure than iOS. Heck, the iPhone has a 274 page user manual... So much for "intuitive".

I guess they will provide two options:
[1] A flash Drives in the retail packaging.
[2] Mac App Store download for Snow Leopard owners.

    Plus a DVD.

So im wondering while i wait for my new imac what your idle/load temps are

Would be super if you wrote which imac you have aswell.

Wondering how much the 95w * cpu does to the temp in the imac.

Would love to hear idle/load gpu temps aswell :)

    * 95Watts are only for the i5 3.1GHz and i7 3.4Ghz, i5 2.7 is rated 65W :o Anyway I'm curious too :D

Who cares??? its a $500 device that can replace all computer needs of any student. Period.

When was the last time you were in a university class? No offense, but before the iPad came out, I said I would purchase one if it did everything I needed it to do (word processing, FULL internet, music, and email). Unfortunately, it doesn't multi-task, and it does not do the full internet.

let's be honest, taking the 3GS out of the equation finally and replacing it with a lower-end or even just a smaller iPhone 4 with a larger size model would be nice change. a smaller model would appeal to many customers who are constantly outdoors, athletic, or would simply welcome the smaller size to fit in skinny jeans. plus a lower price point would make it accessible to many more customers who find the $199 and $299 just out of their reach. a larger iPhone 4 with a potential OLED screen, larger storage capacity, even better camera system (front, back, or both), higher quality and louder speakers, and maybe even a scaled down version of the iWork apps, would appeal to gamers, hardcore Apple fans, businessmen and women, families, and entrepreneurs. don't doubt the appeal of a little change in size...

Overly-general guidelines based on the number of articles is poor structure, if it gets vastly overcrowded then new subcategories should be used very sparingly, but without subsubcategories, a user won't have to click through more than 3 times to get to the article they want from the Guides page, Top Category>Subcategory>Article, and potentially most of the time, two, Top Category>Article, or they'll just search it out which is the most likely, but that doesn't mean a decent hierarchy should be given up since it allows the user to just browse articles of interest.

I don't think the number of clicks is the best metric here. If there are hundreds of articles in a category, it takes a long time to skim through the list of them. If you can spend a few extra seconds narrowing down what you're looking for, it can be much faster to find something.

When I learned film photography in the '70s, we were not allowed to use our SLR cameras. The college provided 4x5 view cameras. That put all of us on the same level for the first year. By the time I was finishing up my senior work using my Nikon the school had beginning students building pin hole cameras. This helped a lot. When I showed up for my first classes, some of the other students had Hasselbad cameras. Forgetting about gear forced us to think about the frame and what was going on in there.

    Dale

Most years I teach at 2nd year composition course, at a small commercial photography college. I grew up with film, and while I love how digital has freed me from some of the boundaries of film (endless undo!) I still think, mostly, like a film shooter.

The college allows the students to use whatever equipment they own. The wet darkroom was removed a couple of years ago, but in that last year we had an interesting student who used the darkroom. First day of my class, the there were mostly Nikons and Canons in the room, but David arrived with his homemade pinhole camera. He was determined to try and do as many of my assignments as possible with it as a challenge (and I accommodated his equipment when I could). And when he wasn't shooting the pinhole he was shooting a Hasselblad Xpan (the 35mm panoramic camera). Again, just so he could a challenge working in that aspect ratio.

He was a very good photographer, and he did really well in my class. But he didn't care about the marks (I think that's another sign of "How to Work Hard, But Still Suck" - spend all your time taking classes. And trying to get good marks.) He just wanted to absorb information, could afford the course, and was going to go and do his own thing as soon as a photojournalist as soon as he could. School was just a way to get up the learning curve quickly.

I forget why I started this post now, but soon as remember his last name I'm going to Google him and get caught up.

I think I was going to say that I've noticed that today's photo students like to 'assemble' their images in PS. We (the faculty) keep telling them that it's still easier to spend the extra few minutes at the time of shooting to fix that thing, than to try to 'Shop it out later. Or to add that extra fill light than to go back and reshoot the assignment because they can't fix it at all later.

    Sigh.

I sound like an old fart.

Lol the majority of comments on this story... Jealous!!!

    This dude showed fantastic initiative!

And i'd say his markup is more near 50% than 10-15%.

A friend of mine actually does iPhone 4 repairs (on the blacks)- as Apple doesnt cover dropping and shattering your phone- and i believe the units, which are expensive as one cannot just replace the glass but also the LCD + digitizer on ip4, cost him around $100 and he fits them within up to half an hour for 200$.

Depending on how you react to the price you may get a 'discount' of 20%.

9/10 dont care just want their baby back lol:apple::D

That's basically it. You pay the $100 because you don't want to read, learn and figure stuff out. Every Mac sold comes with enough software that you could set up your own services using your DSL or Cable Internet connection. Macs have web severs, FTP servers, email and "all the UNIX Stuff" You already have an iDisk right there on your desk that could be accessed from any computer that has a browser but it's easier for most people to pay $100 than to figure out how to make it work.

Although there is truth to what you are saying, broadband providers such as comcast do not allow for use of server activity on their networks from home computers. There is also the issue that some of us, such as myself, whom know how to do all that you explained simply just like to take a break form everything and keep it simple. Also, I have multiple computers and will gladly pay the annual fee for syncing.. 4 computers, desktop, office, laptop and wife's office computer all synced. .mac is more then web services.

As for the .mac mail, very happy with it, happy to see the old interface gone.. also love the new address book wish the bookmarks page design would have been updated too (although I only use this when traveling and it works so why fix it?).

Can anyone confirm this? It's so annoying when new features are turned on by default. I guess I just need to delete my account. I have a fb, but never check it, but I keep it around just because I get an email if somebody sends me a message on there and then I contact them back. Facebook is just awful, worst mistake signing up for it. If you don't have one DON'T GET ONE!!

Therefore the average Japanese would pronounce 'lobster' with an 'L' but 'rabbit' would be pronounced 'labbit'.

Actually, the English word "rabbit" is pronounced "rabitto" in Japanese, without any hint of an "l" sound.

The Japanese "r" sound is not an "l" sound, but rather a short, rolled-tongue, nasal "dr" sound. (Imagine "drabbito," with the "dr" sound coming off the tongue very lapidly, er, rapidly.)

The iPad is not a tablet PC. You can still pay $2,000 for a tablet PC if you want. The iPad is a tablet yes, but it doesn't run a full blown deskptop OS (I'm not getting into that argument).

My point is, Apple used to offer excellent discounts to students and teachers across all of it's product ranges. It's a shame they're not offering the same with the iPad.

Who cares??? its a $500 device that can replace all computer needs of any student. Period.

I'm tired of hearing this backwater lack of imagination. Every student should have an iPad, and the great news is that most can afford one, even without "discounts".

Anyone ever consider that Apple isn't offering much of discount right now, but will at a later date, probably during back-to-school season a.k.a. once supply is high enough and demand has slowed.

Thinking more than 4 feet ahead is always good.

Word is far...because Pages just isn't a word processor... Publisher was a horrible app and Pages is merely an Apple (much better) version albeit still kind of redundant.
The first week Pages was out a lot of people were crowing about a new "Word-killer" and I really felt that was offbase because the better comparison really is to Microsoft Publisher. It reminds me of a light version of Pagemaker from 10 years ago.

Still, I think that Publisher is an important program. It's a lot easier to create a newsletter with photos, columns, fancy headers, etc. in Publisher than it is in Word. I think Apple should not try and compete with Word on the Mac, but should try to create an equivalent to Publisher, only better.

When I need to create a flyer or a newsletter thing, I fire up Publisher on my Windows box because it works. I'm a teacher and sometimes that free-form page layout is the perfect thing. For handouts with pictures, I just use Word, but I'm always annoyed that I have to format the picture so that text will flow around it and I can place it anywhere on the page by drag and drop. I'd rather do stuff like that in a page layout app, but I don't need to spend the $$$$$ for Pagemaker.

Word, is a great app. I know people complain about it being bloated, but I can get everything I need done pretty quickly. I don't find that Word is slow or that it gets in my way. Of course, I've been using Word since it first came out on the Mac and Windows. I'm used to its quirks and can do things pretty easily. Today, I created a short document that has three columns of terms in the middle. I know that I have to insert a section break (continuous) and then format:columns to switch to three column, and then insert another section break (continuous) to go back to one column. Not intuitive, but easy for me.

The one thing I would like to see in Word is a reference database and auto-format for citations so I can switch to APA or MLA style as needed. My grad school professors each have their own ideas about proper style.

Again, Pages shouldn't grow into a competitor for Word. It should be Pagemaker for the rest of us.

I am sure going to make my vote count when my WTO rep is up for re-election!

Under the US constitution congress has the right to sign international treaties. That's what this is.

What exactly is 'illegal' under WTO rules? Tariffs in general are not

Maybe the ruling in this case was incorrect, but if this thing was done more frequently they probably would be found to be breaking the rules.

Apart from the streaming fail, Garmin are way too late to the party. Even when everyone was criticising TomTom, I went and bought it and it (for me) is the ultimate GPS navigator. Free map and service updates, no streaming involved, full multitasking support, been flawless in its navigation, accurate in its info (time of arrival is almost always spot on) and there's traffic when I want it for longer journeys, albeit not free.

The mapping display also doesn't look like a Scooby Doo 'toon unlike the Garmin app, judging from these screenshots...
I bought TomTom, too. Relatively happy with it, even though I was a big Garmin fan before.

Agree with everything you said. If they port over an exact copy of the Nuvi GPS, heck even the basic one, I'd pay for it.

I would never buy a true GPS app that needed to stream, regardless of the price.

Garmin made their fortune with standalone GPS devices, it's a shame they didn't have the forethought to know that everyone but older people would be looking to integrate GPS into their mobile.

When you are watching a YouTube video, I tend to forget where the home button is. Or when surfing the web for some time while in the dark.

And I don't literally mean glow in the dark like those cheap Halloween things, I'm talking about an actual light behind the capacitive square symbol which has a sensor which turns on when there is a certain level of darkness.

I can easily envisage this happening . It would look fantastic.

If they could make it work intelligently with the ambient light sensor as well as the overall brightness of the display (as in when the display shows something dark, the light dims as well), I think it would be quite cool.

It would also allow for an indicator light (in a similar fashion to BlackBerrys and some Nokia phones), something that I'd appreciate. I had a BlackBerry for a while and it was nice not having to manually activate the phone on a regular basis to check for messages.

By the way, glow-in-the-dark implies the green glowing stuff, not button illumination. I misunderstood what you were talking about. ;)
